The director of a high school is found murdered in a southern German town. Suspicion quickly turns to the teacher Alexander Strasser, who has been in conflict with the director for a long time. Strasser was at school that evening until shortly before the murder. However, he cannot provide an alibi.

Did he kill the rector, perhaps in anger? To avoid arrest, he flees to Spain, making himself doubly suspicious.
His friend Winfried is convinced of his innocence and gets him false papers. However, when Winfried reads his friend's diary entries and learns that traumatic experiences of violence shaped his childhood, he begins to have more and more doubts.
